Fastest in unofficial practice, but also an extensive fire in the engine bay was how this Thursday at the Strängnäs race track started. Then the belt to the oil pump tore in the final turn of the first qualifying round when lying second in the heat after Kenneth Hansen, but in front of Michael Jernberg.
Diagnosis of the failure and fixing it was well inside the two minutes rule, but even though the heat was sent away without Thomas. After lots of discussion Thomas was allowed to drive the second round all by himself, and was handed a time which was an average time from that round.
In the third round Thomas had an entertaining fight with K-G Lindkvist, but the fight ended with a broken left rear suspension on the Hyundai Accent. Thomas was, despite the broken suspension, able to bring his car to the finish line, and thereby qualified for the B-final.
Starting from the last row he was soon up to third place, but in the third corner he was hit by Marko Jokinens Peugeot. Both the front and rear left suspension collapsed at the heavy impact and Thomas and his Hyundai Accent was stranded. That Jokinen got a black flag for the incident didn’t help Thomas sitaution, other than he was promoted to forth place in the B-final.
Now there are a few intensive days for the team trying to prepare the Hyundai Accent in time for the long trip from Umeå in northern Sweden to Belgium, where a round of the European Championship will be run next weekend, the 13-14th of August.
